How to tell if a gig offer is worth it

The payout alone doesn’t tell you much. Check two numbers: what the offer pays per hour and what it pays per mile. This works for DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart, Uber, Lyft and any other gig app.

Step 1

Add up the whole trip
Count the time and miles to the pickup, not just to the dropoff. You aren't paid for that part, but it still costs you gas and time.

Step 2

Work out pay per hour
Divide the payout by the minutes, then multiply by 60. A $10 offer that takes 30 minutes pays $20 an hour. This tells you if the trip is worth your time.

Step 3

Work out pay per mile
Divide the payout by the miles. A $10 offer for 8 miles pays $1.25 a mile. This tells you if the trip is worth the gas and wear on your car.

Why a bigger payout can pay less

Offer B pays twice as much, but it takes almost four times as long and drives more than five times as far. Per hour and per mile, Offer A is the better trip. A good offer should clear your minimum on both numbers.

Questions drivers ask

Want to track your real costs? See what Gigways does.

Many delivery drivers aim for at least $1.50 to $2.00 a mile and turn down most offers under $1.00. What's right for you depends on your car, gas prices where you live, and how far you usually drive back after a dropoff, which is why the calculator lets you set your own minimum.

Start with what you want to take home for an hour of work, then add what that hour costs you in gas, wear and tax. That total is your minimum before costs. Set it once when you're not driving, then use the same number for every offer.

Yes. You aren't paid for the drive to the restaurant or the rider, but it still uses your time and your gas. Put in the full time and distance from where you are now to the dropoff, or the offer will look better than it is.

Because the payout doesn't tell you how long it takes or how far you drive. A $20 offer that takes an hour and 25 miles pays less per hour and per mile than an $8 offer that takes 15 minutes and 4 miles.

Track your miles and your costs together for a few weeks. Gigways does this for free: it records your driving automatically and keeps your gas and repair costs next to it, so you can see what each mile costs you.
